New Jersey is full of incredible places to explore, and some of the best hidden gems can be found in our very own backyard! This week, we’re visiting the Deserted Village at Watchung Reservation. Formerly known as Feltville, this eerie site is located right in the middle of the woods and has been preserved by the NJ Historic Preservation. It winds up on so many weird NJ and haunted NJ lists, so if you’re into history, chasing ghosts, or just looking for something fun to do to get out of the house – this place is definitely worth a visit!

The Deserted Village at Watchung Reservation is a Must-Visit in New Jersey

The area has a long and storied history. At one time it was part of an ironworks settlement that was founded in 1845 by David Felt. He wanted to create a self-sufficient village for his workers and their families—a place where they could live, work, and worship together. The village grew quickly with churches, stores, a post office, and even its own newspaper. But by 1862 the ironworks had gone bankrupt and most of its buildings were abandoned. In 1901 all that remained were three cottages inhabited by caretakers who kept watch over the property until 1946 when it was officially purchased by Union County Parks Commission.

Today visitors can take a self-guided tour around what remains of Feltville – exploring everything from old foundations to chimneys – while learning about its fascinating past. The grounds are open every day from dusk until dawn so you can take your time wandering through the ruins without having to worry about getting locked in after hours! You may even spot some wildlife while you’re there – including deer, foxes, wild turkeys, groundhogs, hawks – making this a great place for families looking for something different to do outdoors.

So if you’re looking for a unique way to get out of the house or explore something new with your family or friends – head on over to Watchung Reservation’s Deserted Village! With its eerie atmosphere and fascinating history it’s sure to be an experience like no other! And don’t forget your camera – you never know what kind of amazing sights you might see during your exploration! Plus it’s free admission so why not give it a try?
